As September is finally upon us it is time to reveal more of what visitors to our Heritage Open Day events will be able to see and do this year.
Bartons, Chilwell is open to the public from 10 am to 4.00pm on both Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th of September, and our neighbours of over a century, G.H. Hurt and Son Ltd (Shawl Manufacturers) will be open on the Saturday until 1.00pm.
Very many people have visited Bartons this year for Sunday markets, comedy and music festivals and events, and for one-off private and public occasions. They have seen and I believe have been truly amazed by the colossal reorganisation and changes that we are undertaking to the north of our Chilwell site - the location of most of our most historic buildings.
We have three events in the first weekend of the month, one private party in The Gallery (Nos 43-45 High Road Chilwell), a Bartons Unplugged (music) with Dan Raza on Saturday night (again in The Gallery) and our popular and unusual Sunday Market in the T H Barton Hall on Sunday (No 63 High Road Chilwell).
Moving to the Heritage Open Days, we are happily doing 'more of the same' that has proved so popular in previous years. More lovely hot and cold food, more drink (with this year our newly licenced bar with real ale ) more buses on display and in operation, with substantial help from our former employees (details to be announced during the week).
We have classic cars including some built in Beeston, traditional dancing, and a display giving a respectful nod to the famous old Nottingham brand, Raleigh, in their 125th year. We have the Beeston and District Local History Society museum which proved so very popular last year, plus a photographic gallery, and more. We are also working with Boots, recreating for their lucky guests (booking is essential, please contact Boots themselves on 0115 959 3472 for information) the 'Works Service' Bartons provided to their Beeston site for decades, in authentic period vehicles. We are again displaying classic motor heritage with our friends at Sandicliffe, both over the Heritage Open Days and with their support for our Drive In Cinema between the 13th and 16th of September.
And we have a special, monumental visitor coming, which has laid undisturbed in a foreign (Suffolk, actually) field for more than 20 years. In tribute to its exotic, continental past we have a public premiere of a 49 minute colour film from 1959, which may bring you to tears (in a good way I hasten to add!). The film and visitor seen together should be a sublime experience.
Rather than spend my time further describing the event, why not come along and bring your friends and family on the day. Entrance is free, although if you need to park there will be a small charge. Otherwise why not come by bus, especially with our good friends trent barton who are attending both days and holding their own Charity fundraising event here on the Sunday. Please remember that whilst the capacity of the site is vast, we may have to restrict numbers entering on occasion.
We hope to show you how through Bartons plc, the English Midlands town and village of Beeston and Chilwell are truly 'the spiritual home of the British motor bus', and with the social revolution that motorised public transport brought; be that for better or worse, it is perhaps too early to determine.
